Common names Glasseye Snapper, Goggle-Eye, Toro, Bigeye
Gulfwide on reefs and rocky areas from 50 to 250 feet deep. They are not unusual at offshore oil and gas platforms in the northern Gulf of Mexico. This fish is brilliant red, with occasional darker mottling. It has a deep body, flattened from side-to-side and as its most identifiable feature, a very large red eye. Its smaller close relative, the short bigeye, Pristigenys alta, has an even deeper and more flattened body and an outlandishly large eye. Both species have upwardly tilted mouths. They feed at night on small fishes, crustaceans, worms, and planktonic larvae.
